Rights Respecting School

At Gilbert Colvin we strongly believe that our children should be given the opportunity to learn through both education and enjoyment.

We are working towards achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award. UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) is the organisation working specifically for children and their rights. Its mission is to campaign for the protection of children’s rights in order to meet children’s basic needs and empower them to realise their full potential.

UNICEF UK believes that these values should be embedded in the ethos and curriculum of our schools, and provides a framework in order to accomplish this. This is the purpose of the RRSA (Rights Respecting School Award). As a rights-respecting school we not only teach children’s rights but also model rights and respect in maintaining relationships between teachers, parents and pupils.

Our hope is that becoming a Rights Respecting School will have a positive impact in a number of ways:

  • Improved self-esteem and well-being
  • Improved relationships and behaviour (reductions in bullying and exclusions and improved attendance).
  • Improved engagement in learning
  • Positive attitudes towards diversity in society and the reduction of prejudice
  • Children and young people’s enhanced moral understanding
  • Children and young people’s support for global justice
  • Children and young people become more involved in decision-making in schools
