At Gilbert Colvin Primary school, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop their imagination, skills, knowledge of materials and techniques to create and evaluate their own pieces of art work. Children are able to experiment and take risks in order to enable them to make informed decisions for their art work. Children are given exposure to artists from different cultures and points in history in order to develop their appreciation and widen their views of the vast variety of art work, equipping them with richer knowledge to answer the question ‘what is art?’ They are encouraged to dive deeper into the thought processes of the artist, discussing why and how they made their art piece, and how effective it is for an audience.

Through high quality, inspiring art education, children experience a wide range of hands-on techniques to produce different styles of art. Throughout the process children are encouraged to evaluate their work in order to consider further changes that could be made to develop their work.

We support our children in developing their skills, knowledge and confidence as artists by enabling them to:

• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
• Use sketchbooks in order to develop and evaluate ideas.
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

In Key Stage 1, the children will learn to use a range of different materials creatively to design and make products. They will draw, paint and join materials using sewing to develop techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. They will also learn about the work of a range of great artists and designers.

In Key Stage 2, the children will learn to improve their mastery of art and design techniques. They experiment using a wider range of materials and record their observations and ideas in sketchbooks, using them to review and inform improvements.  They will also learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.
